Marketing tree-planting: a field experiment in India
How technology can be used to motivate individuals to take up tree planting on farms in India
Between 2015-2020, India witnessed an average loss of 668,440 hectares of forest annually. Such substantial tree cover loss has significant implications for local weather patterns and the economy. However, by planting trees on farms, individuals can help local communities become more resilient to climate shocks. This research aims to design and test a battery of expert-designed messaging strategies to motivate individuals to take up tree planting on their farms. We will assess the impact of these messaging strategies, as well as blockchain and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) created marketing content, by comparing the rates at which households in Uttarakhand, India engage in tree planting. This research project is a collaboration with the Society for Consumer Psychology initiative on Climate Change and a team of climate change researchers. This project is supported by the Sui Foundation.
